keynotes in constrast
January 12th, 2006Everyone who follows mac news knows that Steve released new products at Tuesday’s keynote. With the incredible expectations that people put upon Apple for these events, they have a tough time fulfilling expectations. I’ll admit I am a bit disappointed by the (lack of) announcements but I realize that Apple will release new, cooler products in due time.
And while I’m feeling good about Apple for possibly disappointing the Mac faithful, I should point out that not too long ago Apple was at the brink of death. People used those kind of words (ie “brink of death”) to describe Apple a while ago and it’s important to realize that it wasn’t just the Apple-haters who saw Apple as headed for the grave. Google video has the MacWorld 1997 Keynote in which Steve Jobs makes his comeback to Apple, announces the deal with Bill Gates, and is subsequently booed. What shocked me most about this keynote was not that aforementioned incident. What really got me was just how serious the tone was in the room about the fate of Apple. There was absolutely no doubt in the room that Apple would be dead in a short amount of time if something drastic wasn’t done soon.
Steve gives a list of things that Apple needs to do to become relevant which include focusing on what they do best and focusing on innovation. It’s amazing to hear these thing because it almost seems like Mr. Jobs had the foresight to see the current state of Apple from 1997. I think he has a vision for Apple in 2015 and my guess is that the difference between 2015 and 2006 is probably just as big a contrast between Apple in 1997 and 2006.

I just found and watched that keynote.
The crowd was very emotional, and being a Mac fan, so did I
People started booing when Jobs put the Microsoft logo on screen, and Bill was booed and applauded at the same time, when he appeared on the screen. Very funny/awkward moment, those were tough times…
For those who don’t know, Microsoft sold its 150$ non-voting stock after the three year period, around 2000. Too bad for them, as the stock is worthing more than 10x more

I don’t know why I bother, it’s not like you’re going to keep my comments anyway. And even if you did, you wouldn’t use the vast amounts of insight found therein.
bastard.
