mac software

May 10th, 2006

I just bought TextMate. It cost me about $50. I’ve realized that I’ve been buying software at a pretty high rate since I started making money. When I look back, some of my purchases were quite regrettable. Here are my thoughts:

  • SubEthaEdit: nice text editor, wouldn’t have bought it if I had used TextMate first.
  • Delicious Library: I’ve got great respect for Mr. Shipley and this app was fun for a day or so but it wasn’t worth my $40.
  • OmniWeb: I’ve had a license since before Safari came out and I’ve used it off and on. I stopped using it when their engine really started lagging behind Safari’s. The new 5.5 builds will probably make me an OmniWeb user again.
  • OmniGraffle: I just renewed this license. Holy crap it’s getting expensive! $80 seems pretty steep but it’s one of my favorite apps
  • Ecto: I think this was worth $18. I use it for all my posts.
  • iBank: Here’s $40 I wish I could get back. This app really has some problems.
  • TextMate: The best mac os x text editor (other than vim). $50 is a bit steep but I think BBEdit costs about twice that.
  • Transmit: I held off on this one for a while thinking that Apple would add read/write support for ftp volumes. I finally gave up on that. This app is great.
  • VoodooPad: I use this app for TODO lists but I should have probably not bought it and just used a text editor for that. I’m still not sure I like the idea of an app dedicated to recording random thoughts but there are a few similar apps on the Mac that to exactly that so the need must exist.

I read two articles/blog entries that I can’t recall offhand that talked about the financial difficulty of the authors of VoodooPad and SubethaEdit. I bought each of them after reading their respective article. In retrospect, I should have just felt sorry for them and moved on.
