INTC
June 22nd, 2006I remember roughly 2 years ago, AMD brought the Opteron (and Athlon 64) to market. It was awesome! I still remember being amazed at the power and inexpensiveness of the Athlon 64 I used to use. It was and continues to be a great chip. Meanwhile, Intel was stuck in Pentium 4 land and kept pursuing longer and longer pipelines for faster and faster clock speeds on chips that were running hotter and hotter. The relative performance of the stock price of Intel and AMD over the past two years shows what happened in the market:
Everyone, especially Intel, realizes the folly in focusing exclusively on clock speed. Intel has been hemorrhaging market share for the past year or two and they are now taking AMD very seriously. They’re opening new plants to get to 45nm, aggressively cutting prices, and building chips with better performance per watt than AMD. My random guess is that in a year, INTC will sell for $30.
